The federal government actually needs, and wants, more small businesses to submit proposals for contracts.
In FY 2009 (most recent data available), $3.8 trillion was allocated for government spending, yet government contracting is a largely untapped market due to misconceptions about government contracting and a confusing process that precludes most from entering.
Of that $3.8 trillion budget, agencies’ cumulative target goal for prime contract awards to small business was 23%, yet they came up short—as they have for every year on record. Despite not achieving their goal, small businesses still earned $97 billion.
Agencies have minimum acquisition goals in the following categories:
Small Business 23%
Women-Owned Small Business 3%
Service-Disabled Veteran 3%
Veteran-Owned Small Business 3%
Historically Underutilized Business Zone 3%
